Update: There was an update to redsn0w (v0.9.6RC12) that adds the option for animated boot logos. If you’ve already jailbroke your device with it, you can simply re-run the jailbreak (make sure to deselect Cydia first in redsn0w) to get the new feature. The download links have been updated.

Last Sunday evening/early Monday morning, the iPhone-Dev Team released their updated version of redsn0w and PwnageTool. Both are able to provide an untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3.1 devices (all but the iPad 2). More information and download links are below!
This jailbreak is compatible with the following devices:
- iPhone3GS
- iPhone4 (GSM)
- iPod touch 3G
- iPod touch 4G
- iPad1
- AppleTV 2G (PwnageTool only for now)
The untether exploit comes from Stefen Esser (@i0n1c).
I’ll briefly describe the 2 available jailbreak tools.
redsn0w 0.9.6rc15
Mac | Windows (Run with XP SP3 compatibility mode if on Vista or Windows 7)
This tool is able to jailbreak your iDevice on-the-fly, meaning you don’t have to restore your device. As long as you’re on iOS 4.3.1, you can run redsn0w to give your device an untethered jailbreak. It’s very straightforward, and takes just a couple of minutes to do.
PwnageTool 4.3
Mac (PT is a Mac-only tool)
PwnageTool allows you to create your own customizable jailbreak package. It does this by taking a stock IPSW file, modifying it to whatever you choose from PwnageTool (root partition size, pre-installed Cydia packages, etc), and then gives you a pre-jailbroken IPSW file that you can restore to with iTunes. This is for advanced users, or users who wish to prevent their basebands from gettings updated.
There you have it folks! This was probably the most anticipated jailbreak to-date.

SO, if I have SHSH’s for previous iOS releases, can I downgrade to a previous baseband version for purposes of an unlock? TIA!
Even thinking about an unlock right now is pointless, as any non-iOS 4.2.1 baseband (including 01.59.00 and the one from iOS 4.1) will not work properly with iOS 4.3.x.
But yes, you can do that. You’ll only get 1 bar of signal no matter where you go, though, but cellular data and phone calls should work fine.

I have a iPhone 3GS on iOS 4.2.1, with baseband 06.15.00, Jailbroken with redsn0w 0.9.6b6.
When I update to iOS 4.3.1, I’ll be able to Jailbreak my iPhone with the new redsn0w 0.9.6rc9. The ultrasn0w unlock will also work for my iPhone 3GS?
I also have a iPad 32gb (without 3G) on iOS 4.2.1 Jailbroken with the latest greenpois0n. I need to upgrade my firmware to 4.3.1 (via iTunes) and then just Jailbreak it with the new redsn0w 0.9.6rc9, right?
I know its common doubts, but I rather ask before to avoid any mess up with my iDevices.

Regarding the 3GS: You can go ahead and make a custom IPSW with PwnageTool so that it will prevent your baseband from getting updated.
Regarding the iPad 1G: Correct.
You can’t really permanently mess-up iDevices. The worst case scenario is that you’d have to do a restore. The chances of bricking it are incredibly slim.

Doesn’t work with iOS Apple TV and Pwnage Tool in Expert mode:

How to get this working?
Also, what is the path that Apple TV .ipsw’s should normally reside in, i.e. like:

I ALREADY have that version JB via Seas0npass — Pwnage Tool 4.3 implies that it is compatible with the 4.3 version — apparently they need to clarify that, since it’s not?! *big sigh*
On top of that, there is a “AppleTV2,1_4.3_8F202.bundle” in
/Applications/iPhone-iPad/PwnageTool.app/Contents/Resources/FirmwareBundles/
What gives?!
UPDATE: Problem ended up that the .ipsw only partially downloaded — re-downloaded the full firmware and worked like a charm!

If you were officially unlocked through your carrier, then yes, you can jailbreak with redsn0w without having to worry about anything.

I updated my 3Gs by mistake from 3.2.1 to 4.3.1…I used the redsnow to jailbreak using ISPW Iphone2,1_4.2.1_8c148a_Restore….Everything worked fine except the network on my sim card…calls are failed…Please help…

How About the Iphone 3G?
iOS 4.3+ isn’t compatible, as Apple’s dropping support for that device.
Will there be a way for me to get Multitasking Gestures on 4.2.1?
It’s only compatible on iOS 4.3+.
I have the iPod4,1_4.3.2_8H7_Restore & redsn0w_win_0.9.6rc14. Ipsw was not recognised. Mind lending a hand?
Is the iPod4,1 file a .zip or a .ipsw? If it’s a .zip, you have to change it to a .ipsw. If it’s already an .ipsw, then try redownloading it to make sure it isn’t corrupted or anything.
How2 do you change from .zip to .ipsw?

Set your compatibility.
How? I am beating my head against the wall trying to figure out how to make it stop crashing.
1. Check to make sure that you’re on the latest version of iTunes.
2. Make sure you’re running redsn0w as an administrator.
3. Change your compatibility settings to XP SP2 (or SP3 if you have it) by right-click on redsn0w, going to properties, and then into the compatibility tab.
try using the latest jailbreak may be it will do better for you …
I have an Iphone 3GS and running 4.3.2. I tird using Redsnow 0.9.6rc14 but when it gets to the disc screenb it stops and doesn’t finninsh the upload. What am I doing wrong. is my booot the new or old one? SN: 850511KAEDG
Change the compatibility settings for redsn0w to XP SP2 or SP3.
ok, I double checked. I have it set for SP2. I don’t have a sp3 option. ran redsnow. and it got half way with uploading ramdisc and stopped again. this is frustrating. I made sure to chose that it is the newer boot mode and only checked for cycia. somthing still is not working right. any thing else that i can do to get this to go right.
Try using a different computer.
open redsnow then start task manager then right click redsnow program and go to processes then right click again and goto set affinity and make sure cpu1 is the only one selected and that should be it

No. You always either have to update or restore, both of which will remove all of your jailbreak related files.
